Join us for the latest workshop in our “Shooting for Success” photography series featuring Patrick Murphy-Racey.

Murphy-Racey’s work has appeared on four covers of Sports Illustrated, and he has shot more than 600 assignments for SI since 1992. He also shot this brilliant image of former University of Tennessee football standout Eric Berry.

“Shooting for Success:” A Progressive Lighting Workshop will be held on Saturday, July 17, at the UT Conference Center in downtown Knoxville.

The workshop fee is $119 if you register by May 31; online registration is available. (The fee is $129 between June 1 and July 17.)

This workshop is progressive in that it begins with teaching you how to effectively use available light.

Through demonstrations, we’ll move into using on-camera flash, then into getting the flash off the camera via hard-wire cord and with radio-controlled TTL system, and finally into using studio strobes.

Once we get into strobes, we’ll first work with one-light portraits, use a single light source with reflectors, and then move into multiple light systems for environmental portraiture. We’ll also explore how to effectively use radio transceivers to fire remote strobes.

There is a big difference between loading up a large truck full of lighting gear and driving to a shoot versus getting on a plane for a brief encounter with an athlete or CEO that lasts only minutes.

Murphy-Racey will explain how to get great light with minimal gear as well as what it takes to create a top-notch professional portrait when there is no limit to the equipment available.

The progressive lighting workshop will closely follow Murphy-Racey’s career as he moved from newspaper to magazine work, and finally into full-blown advertising and industrial photography.

Murphy-Racey has been shooting editorial, commercial, and advertising assignments for almost 20 years.

The “Shooting for Success” series is a part of the UT Photography Certificate Program.
